This morning we were up early so that we’d be finished breakfast and ready to go on a tour of the city with Hans Wilhelm and Peter. As it turned out, I had miscalculated the time, so when we were ready to go for breakfast, it was only 8:00 AM and not 9:00! Oh well, that gave us lots of time for a leisurely breakfast, which was included in the room cost. Matt came to the hotel, so we snuck him into the dining room as well.
Hans Wilhelm and Peter picked us up at 10:00 and took us for a tour above the city. We also stopped at the ‘Fantoft Stavekirke’. The church was originally built around 1150 and was destroyed by fire in 1992. The arsonist was a young heavy metal rock “artist”, who was found guilty of burning down 4 other churches in Bergen and Oslo. He was charged with burning down the stave church, but the jury found him not guilty. The judges believed this was an error, but didn’t overturn the verdict.
After the tour, Hans Wilhelm took us to his daughter’s home for lunch with Lisa, her husband Ivar and their young son, Ola….he was very entertaining.
After a relaxing visit there, we drove to Peter’s home, which is located across from the Hurtigruten docks and about a 15-20 minute walk from our hotel. The ladies went for a walk along the docks with Peter, while Hans Wilhelm, Matt and I wandered a little further around the area.
Peter prepared an excellent cured ham dinner for the 6 of us. After saying our goodbyes, Hans Wilhelm drove us back to the hotel. The 2 of them certainly went above and beyond what we expected from a visit with them by entertaining us for a full 12 hours. Hans Wilhelm and Peter, if you’re reading this, thank you so very much and please pass our appreciation on to Lisa, Ivar and Ola.
